Thoughts I feel like I'm being harsh with this rating but I literally only really enjoyed the last 3 chapters。 Which was a surprise and different from the movie。 My biggest issue with the start was the pacing。 I felt like there plot could have been told in one chapter but instead the story just went on and on。Sam is 1000%%% the best character in this series and Frodo does not deserve him。 The rest of the fellowships plots I feel were supposed to get their shining moments but I was just bored。 Th Thoughts I feel like I'm being harsh with this rating but I literally only really enjoyed the last 3 chapters。 Which was a surprise and different from the movie。 My biggest issue with the start was the pacing。 I felt like there plot could have been told in one chapter but instead the story just went on and on。Sam is 1000%%% the best character in this series and Frodo does not deserve him。 The rest of the fellowships plots I feel were supposed to get their shining moments but I was just bored。 There was war and politics but not good politics because there wasn't enough depth to care。 I honestly just read this so the series could be done。 It's not my favourite。 I can see it's value but it's not for me。 And that's okay。 Representation N/AContent WarningWar, Death, Death of Animals, Decapitation, Suicide 。。。more

Definitely better than the previous two books。 From the pacing to the way that the story is presented in this book, it was a much faster and more enjoyable read。 A true revolutionary in the fantasy genre that many authors today are wisely taking influence from。

I had not re-read this series since high school。 I'm not sure why, and I honestly regret not re-reading sooner。 I now fully understand why The Lord of the Rings continues to be a fantasy classic。I've loved the movies since their initial release。 I was in 8th grade when The Fellowship of the Ring was released and watched it in theatres FOUR times。 I loved it so much。 This story is an epic tale of hope, redemption, loss, and friendship。 I sobbed SEVERAL times while reading, especially in The Retur I had not re-read this series since high school。 I'm not sure why, and I honestly regret not re-reading sooner。 I now fully understand why The Lord of the Rings continues to be a fantasy classic。I've loved the movies since their initial release。 I was in 8th grade when The Fellowship of the Ring was released and watched it in theatres FOUR times。 I loved it so much。 This story is an epic tale of hope, redemption, loss, and friendship。 I sobbed SEVERAL times while reading, especially in The Return of the King。 The final lines are so wonderful。Tolkien is the master world-builder。 When you read, the Lord of the Rings, you are transported to Middle-Earth。 My favorite trilogy for sure! I definitely recommend reading it。"'Yes,' said Gandalf; ' for it will be better to ride back three together than one alone。 Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth。 Go in peace! Possibly my fave of the 3。 Although my love for this one only increased my love for the first 2。 Whilst I found some parts of the overall trilogy dragged and not written in my fave outfits style as I have now finished and look back on the journey it is clear how much it has impacted me。 Absolutely amazing 10/10

Wonderful though the prose is, and richly-wrought the world, with many fair things in it, yet will I knock off a star for the descriptions of orcs and “swarthy men”, being too like to humans of dark hue in these latter days。 Talk of the high race of Númenor also disturbs me with notions of eugenics。 Yet fair are the Elves and I would fain look upon their beauty, that has faded from the world, so the Red Book tells that was long kept in the Shire。 And mighty are the deeds of Frodo and Sam, Meriad Wonderful though the prose is, and richly-wrought the world, with many fair things in it, yet will I knock off a star for the descriptions of orcs and “swarthy men”, being too like to humans of dark hue in these latter days。 Talk of the high race of Númenor also disturbs me with notions of eugenics。 Yet fair are the Elves and I would fain look upon their beauty, that has faded from the world, so the Red Book tells that was long kept in the Shire。 And mighty are the deeds of Frodo and Sam, Meriadoc and Peregrin, Aragorn and Gandalf, Legolas and Gimli, Éowyn and Faramir, and like old friends they have become to me who has read their chronicle many a time in the watches of the night。 Sad is the tale of Aragorn and Arwen, yet fair and beautiful is their love, and the city of Gondor where they dwelt。 Thus out of the Third Age of the world, we behold the truth that great deeds turn to naught, unless the doers relinquish utterly the weapons of power and domination, that turn to ruin all that lies under the hand of the wielder of that weapon。 And so even those who are accounted weak and small in the eyes of the world may accomplish great deeds, though they remain unsung in places far away from the places where the deeds were done。 。。。more

I was not a big fan of Merry and Pippin till now, love those lil guys (and they are for sure in love with each other)。 I definitely missed the Gimli and Legolas friendship in this one as I think they had more air time in the second part。 Lots of fun to be had though! Except I always find Tolkein's chronology weird。 And it's a shame men didn't think women were cool enough to be in stories, because I think the fellowship could have benefited from more fem fighting energy, sign of the times I guess I was not a big fan of Merry and Pippin till now, love those lil guys (and they are for sure in love with each other)。 I definitely missed the Gimli and Legolas friendship in this one as I think they had more air time in the second part。 Lots of fun to be had though! I don't even remember when I read, or finished the third volume of the Tolkien trilogy; I got bogged down in the middle of The Two Towers while in high school (in the late 60s), yet I know I ultimately finished reading the trilogy at some point before I bought my first copy of The Silmarillion, in hardback in the late 70s, while I was a bookseller。All I can say at this point is that it was a slog, but an enjoyable slog, and my interest in the mythology and 'history' of Middle-Earth continues and I don't even remember when I read, or finished the third volume of the Tolkien trilogy; I got bogged down in the middle of The Two Towers while in high school (in the late 60s), yet I know I ultimately finished reading the trilogy at some point before I bought my first copy of The Silmarillion, in hardback in the late 70s, while I was a bookseller。All I can say at this point is that it was a slog, but an enjoyable slog, and my interest in the mythology and 'history' of Middle-Earth continues and deepens over time。Tolkien is one of the four pillars that literary generation for me - Huxley, C。S。 Lewis, Tolkien and E。M。 Forster - and my interest in my grandfather's generation of literary giants continues to fascinate me all the way to Flying Over Sunset and Beyond。。。。 。。。more

I am really disappointed to be finishing 'The Lord of the Rings' series on such a low。 I've said that I've had some issues with the previous books, but there were always some highlights, maybe intrigue, maybe interesting characters, maybe scenic descriptions, maybe a form of subtle magic。 But there was little for me to love here。 This is not to say that I don't appreciate the overall value of the book, but my enjoyment was very limited。The book is divided in two parts, and part one is only about I am really disappointed to be finishing 'The Lord of the Rings' series on such a low。 I've said that I've had some issues with the previous books, but there were always some highlights, maybe intrigue, maybe interesting characters, maybe scenic descriptions, maybe a form of subtle magic。 But there was little for me to love here。 This is not to say that I don't appreciate the overall value of the book, but my enjoyment was very limited。The book is divided in two parts, and part one is only about battles。 This is where my frustration starts。 I don't like reading battle scenes, I find them insanely boring by default, I don't care about the blow by blow, punch by punch, I'd be satisfied with only the outcome and highlights, give me a summary。 When I think about battles I've enjoyed reading, 'The Poppy War' by R。F。 Kuang comes to mind。 I was attached to the characters, and the magic system invoking spirits was fascinating。 I cared。 But here the battle scenes are incredibly confusing and lack good narrative。 It's person A and person B in location C taking an enumeration of actions。 It moves from a scene to another really quickly, and I had trouble following, plus there wasn't enough to capture my interest。 The locations weren't sufficiently developed, and there were so many peripheral characters that I can't remember without more specific traits。 This part was a nightmare for me to read。However, with all my hopes in part two, it didn't deliver。 We now follow Sam and Frodo (I still hate that the book is split so abruptly) and their entire story is different events in which Sam helps Frodo, who is weakened by the ring。 And when the monumental moment comes in which to destroy the ring, things happen pretty much instantly。 I even had to go back to re-read the page to confirm that was it。So honestly, very little happens that I care about。 The story is propelled by the aforementioned one pager。 I could forgive it if the world-building continued to be fascinating, if there was more intrigue, more story, but it was all action in the first part and all repetition in the second。 I still like the story and the world, but this was not my ideal epic fantasy。 I also don't think the writing quite did it for me, it either reads aged or incredibly formal, especially in dialogue。 It is verbose even in places where it doesn't have to be, I can appreciate verbosity when it adds to expression but here it just added word count。 I wish this was more intense, perhaps fewer battle scenes delivered more slowly and detailed, or more about the psychology of Gollum, Sam or Frodo, but in this way it didn't deliver for me。 。。。more

I am proud to say that I have finished this trilogy and (almost) all of the appendixes, the only exceptions being Tolkien’s explanation of the calendars and languages。 Even though at first I was afraid to be wearied of even more details, I really, really enjoyed reading the histories and backstories of Middle Earth。 I do think I understand much more overall。

The beautiful, magical and at the same time very human world Tolkien creates captivates you from the first page。 Magnificent fairy tale which makes you think of life。 Unfortunately in reality a lot of evil and destruction is made by humans which might even have smart eyes and beautiful faces, not by ugly and reticent orcs。 I enjoyed the trilogy as a very delicate and delicious food。 My only question remains: why women in these world are so scarce?
